Memory Foam Magic |
Although not the cheapest of mattresses, the cost of memory foam
mattresses has come down enormously in recent years, and if you are in
the market for a new mattress, then they are certainly worth looking at.
Memory foam was an invention of the late 1960s and NASA was involved in
its development as a functional material to improve the comfort and
safety of aircraft pilots and space astronauts. The very special
properties of the material are the result of very careful control over
its mechanical and chemical structure. Unlike normal foam materials
which consist of a very large number of sealed tiny air bubbles, the
air bubbles in memory foam are not sealed but rather they bubbles are
interconnected.
When the material is subjected to pressure, for instance a body lying
on it, it conforms to the shape of the body in such a manner that the
body is supported evenly. You literally sink into the material and your
body is supported without undue pressure being exerted on any part of
it. It really is a most pleasant experience and much more comfortable
than a conventional foam mattress.
By carefully tailoring the physics and chemistry of memory foam, subtle
modifications can be made to its properties, and there is available a
large range of different grades of the material, each grade being
suitable for a specific purpose. There are different degrees of
firmness and density, sensitivity to body heat (newer materials
actually respond to body heat) and warmth. You need to find out the
kind of mattress most suitable for you and your pocket.
Many people have discovered that buying a memory foam mattress
is a real investment in the latest sleep technology. A good
night’s sleep is essential to how we feel and to our
wellbeing. Certainly it is worth looking into how this material, once
destined for space exploration, will help you sleep soundly under the
stars.
